She Likes to Rub it on Stuff

29 May

I don’t know why Pip sits like this. I’ve never seen a dog do this before.

I have two dogs one male and one female and they both do it. But until these two, I had never seen a dog lay that way before.

  2. Steph May 29, 2011 at 11:18 am #

My family’s had a couple of male foster dogs that have sat like that (one Lhasa Apso and one cocker spaniel/poodle)… it is odd!

  3. Melody May 29, 2011 at 11:21 am #

Both of my dogs have sat like that! Our vet called it “frogging.” It is a sign that the dog is happy and very relaxed!

  4. Dani May 29, 2011 at 11:35 am #

Both of our dogs sit like that as well. I also think the girls like rubbing it on stuff.

  5. Dave May 29, 2011 at 11:45 am #

I was told by a vet they do this to cool down. Usually done on a cold surface like a kitchen floor.

  6. Donna Siano May 29, 2011 at 11:47 am #

What a cute little girl you have. My beagle also does it.

  7. Janet May 29, 2011 at 11:49 am #

“Uh, excuse me. Privacy would be appreciated!”…”Now, that’s better.”.
    Have a great week!

My little Pommy, Dakota, lays like this all the time. Ive had other small dogs that did so as well. They look comfy♥

  9. Meg May 29, 2011 at 12:00 pm #

I have seen lots of purebred dogs lay like that, I think it may be a purebred thing? But maybe not, it does look funny!

  10. oh_pook May 29, 2011 at 12:03 pm #

My Olive Juice is a border collie/ lab/ mutt and does that sometimes too. It makes me smile everytime… goofy puppies

  11. Chaely May 29, 2011 at 12:12 pm #

My dog does it when he’s hot because we have wood floors & they’re cold on his belly. We can tell spring is coming because Hamilton starts “splatting” all over the house.

  12. Worm Wrangler May 29, 2011 at 12:27 pm #

My cat lays like that too!

  13. Elizabeth May 29, 2011 at 12:27 pm #

That’s how my dog sits too:/

  14. KathyinMN May 29, 2011 at 12:52 pm #

Frog dog! That’s what we always called it when my cocker spaniel did it. I think they sit like that because they can. Heck, if I were that flexible, I would.

    • Teresa Avalon May 29, 2011 at 7:58 pm #

Oh my, I had forgotten that nickname. Almost all my dogs had it at one time or another but my current guy doesn’t do this and it just flitted out of my brain.

  15. Kim May 29, 2011 at 1:07 pm #

Add my male poodle to the list!

  16. Diane May 29, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

Our toy poodle has sat like this since she was a puppy. It is her way of relaxing.
    Blessings
    Diane

  17. Crimsong19 May 29, 2011 at 1:59 pm #

My dog Niki does that sometimes.

  18. Kathyann May 29, 2011 at 2:03 pm #

LoL She is so cute. I have a Chihuahua. They act more like cats, in my opinion. My D.J. loves cats.

  19. Jessica May 29, 2011 at 2:11 pm #

My chihuahua used to scoot on her ass all over the place….we brought he to the vet and he said her anal glands needed to be drained! I hate to know what glands need to be drained if shes sittin like THAT!

  20. Pedro May 29, 2011 at 2:35 pm #

Yo tampoco he visto nunca a un perro sentarse de ese modo.

  21. BUNNY LEGS! Most small breed dogs (even Schnauzer size) do this when they have wiggly back knees. If you check with a vet, she’ll probably show you where the knee slips left and right. They do this to stretch out the tendons that tighten up. SO cute!!

    • Teresa Avalon May 29, 2011 at 8:00 pm #

Hmm, interesting, I know that ligament of which you speak. One of my dogs had two surgeries because of it. I can’t remember if he still did it after the surgery. Geez, I have a mind like a steel sieve.

  22. Maah May 29, 2011 at 2:57 pm #

    Awww… Super cute!! (:

  23. Debbie Johnson May 29, 2011 at 3:01 pm #

My black Lab lays like that, especially when she’s too warm.

  24. Livia Llewellyn May 29, 2011 at 4:13 pm #

Both of my beagles did this pose. I call it the “pork chop”.

  25. Jeff May 29, 2011 at 4:31 pm #

My Cocker Spaniel does that all the time.

  26. Jeff May 29, 2011 at 4:33 pm #

I think this device was used for LOST: http://youtu.be/hFyv6t3OS3c

  27. Shannon May 29, 2011 at 4:45 pm #

Add my malti-poo to the mix!

  28. Tom May 29, 2011 at 4:55 pm #

That is a common behavior found in many dogs of the Hoochiewawa breed.

  29. Tetamara515 May 29, 2011 at 7:15 pm #

My Chonzer puppy (Miniature Schnauzer- Bichon Frise) sits like that all of the time, too.

  30. Robyn Ciaburri May 29, 2011 at 7:18 pm #

Spanky lays like that all the time….Complete trust and love for her family

  31. Jessica May 29, 2011 at 7:42 pm #

Both of my Malti-Chons do this as well…

  32. Heather Crandall May 29, 2011 at 7:42 pm #

I have a Maltipom and she does that ALL the time. It makes me laugh. She also tries to position her hoo-hoo over my hand (or my husband’s) so we’ll rub her there. HA HA HA! So gross! She’s fixed too!🙂

  33. MARTA May 29, 2011 at 7:43 pm #

mi perro de momento nunca se ha sentado de esta manera.

  34. Teresa Avalon May 29, 2011 at 7:56 pm #

More of mine have than haven’t sat that way from time to time. My current standard poodle doesn’t but he makes up for it with many equally undignified poses.

I bet she loves belly rubs.

  35. Shelley May 29, 2011 at 10:00 pm #

My Mom’s (male)cat and (female)dog both will sit like that. We call it “being froggy.” Guess it just reminded me of a frog and the phrase stuck!

  36. Donna S May 29, 2011 at 11:54 pm #

My shih tzu does it, he’s male & fixed. I had a persian cat that did it too, laying on the floor. We always joked that he was trying to cool his you know what off.

  37. Donna S May 29, 2011 at 11:55 pm #

Also the dog ‘nurses’ on a stuffed rabbit that was my daughter. When I had to board him for a week, I made sure to send that bunny with him!

  38. Tina May 30, 2011 at 12:44 am #

My Labrador does this too and several of my dogs in the past did it. It is not a girl thing at all, they just want to cool down their bellies or just like to rub their bellies on the couch or the carpet. But mine mostly did it when it was hot and on the floor to cool down.

  39. Erica May 30, 2011 at 1:44 am #

My puppy Max sits like that!
First time I saw it, I caught my breath as it looked like his spine and back legs had been squashed by a falling anvil, Tom and Jerry style🙂

  40. LSE May 30, 2011 at 3:51 am #

My poodle Ignatius does that all the time! He’s a crazy double jointed little guy though, because then he’ll sit up with his front legs and leave the back ones like that- he looks like he’s doing a yoga position!

  41. Claudia May 30, 2011 at 4:04 am #

She just knows that you will put the picture on your blog and make all of us laugh!
What a crowd pleaser she is!!!🙂

  42. Jackie May 30, 2011 at 4:56 am #

My aunt’s black lab sits like that. They call her Frog Dog.

  43. Arthur May 30, 2011 at 6:39 am #

Man I thought my dog was the only one that does that! haha

  44. Sugarplum's Mom May 30, 2011 at 8:38 am #

I had golden retrievers growing up that all sat like that… especially in the summer time. More exposed belly on the ground = cooler dog.

  45. Christina May 30, 2011 at 8:38 am #

I have a male black lab mix and he sits the same way sometimes.

  46. aj May 30, 2011 at 11:04 am #

I can’t wait till Alcatraz starts because quite frankly this blog has become about your dogs…

  47. Lex May 30, 2011 at 11:31 am #

We call it the frog pose as well! My male pug does this too!🙂

  48. Kim May 30, 2011 at 11:47 am #

Every Corgi I’ve ever known has done this. Mine, her parents, and all her six siblings, plus the Corgis of friends. Of course, their legs are all only about 3 inches long, so it makes sense to me.

  49. yellowdog granny May 30, 2011 at 1:44 pm #

they ususally wait to do that right after they have peed and on something that is white and needs to go to the cleaners.

  50. dawn May 30, 2011 at 1:49 pm #

The flying frog! I have owned a total of 3 small dogs, and all of them have posed that way from time to time. So cute…I just want to tickle their toes when they do that.

  51. riggledo May 30, 2011 at 2:23 pm #

My family had a dog that would lie like that a lot, but it was usually on hot days and on smooth surfaces, like tile. We assumed she was trying to cool off by outting her relatively hairless belly on the cool surface. Clearly that does not esplain this picture in the least!

  52. Lance May 30, 2011 at 3:30 pm #

My dalmation used to drag her butt aroundo n the grass like that all the time. The wierdest part about that was that wherever she did that at, the next day mushrooms would sprout up there! True story!

  53. carole May 30, 2011 at 6:03 pm #

We had a dalmation that used to lay like that…we called her froggy-dog

  54. Libby May 30, 2011 at 7:49 pm #

My Shiba Inu spayed female dog does that alllllll the time! I agree that it probably cools off their belly.

  55. Irish Girl May 30, 2011 at 8:53 pm #

Sure, my little MinPin Billy does that all the time. I think it IS because it cools his body temperature to lie that way. Does look hilarious, though.

  56. Voltaire May 30, 2011 at 9:34 pm #

I’m reiterating what a lot of people have already said, but my brother’s female golden retriever lays like that all the time. I call it ‘frog legs.’

  57. Uncle Walts Niece May 30, 2011 at 10:48 pm #

Our 80-lb Black Lab/Rottweiler Mix, Bobby used to sit like that…We called him “Super Dog” when he did it because he looked like he was flying ! All he needed was a red cape !

  58. lindaluau May 31, 2011 at 8:06 am #

My dog used to sit that way to scratch her belly- then she’d just get too lazy to change position.

  59. Hawk May 31, 2011 at 9:43 am #

I had a dog who laid like that. He liked having his belly exposed to lay on the cool tile floor.

  60. Jennie D. May 31, 2011 at 10:25 am #

    Husky frogs: Check.

    Poodle frogs: Check.

Seems all the cool kids are doing it.

  61. Cosmetic Dentistry West Hollywood May 31, 2011 at 10:29 am #

I actually have a miniature Cocker Spaniel that sits like that, too. I think it’s their way of claiming more space. Or at least, I think that’s mine’s idea, because her big brother likes to take up the whole couch.

  62. Shannomo May 31, 2011 at 11:07 am #

This must be a little dog thing, my Pug dogs both used to sit like this. They are getting old now and I don’t think they bend that way anymore🙂

  63. gringation May 31, 2011 at 11:31 am #

I have 3 female poodles and they all lie down like this since they were puppies. We live in a hot climate, and I think the cool tile floors feel good on their bellies.

  64. Lindsay May 31, 2011 at 2:50 pm #

My dog Rosie is lying like that right now!

  65. AlexandraShajova May 31, 2011 at 7:51 pm #

Hi Hugo. I´m Alexandra from Argentina. My dog is the cutest little pug and he does it too, i wanted to show you a picture of him but I dont know how.

  66. Teresa Avalon May 31, 2011 at 10:15 pm #

May I caption?: With the way she is looking back, she looks like she’s saying, “does this position make my butt look fat?”

  67. Christie June 1, 2011 at 3:03 pm #

Every dog I’ve ever had sat/sits like this. It’s so cute! Two of my current dogs are beagles and they look like little furry bear rugs when they lay on the floor like that.

  68. Pamela B June 2, 2011 at 12:42 am #

Our Basset Hound does this. I always think she looks like a seal. The best part is when one of the cats stretches out next to her in the same position!

  69. Marta June 2, 2011 at 8:48 am #

    She likes doing yoga😛

  70. krashton June 2, 2011 at 8:29 pm #

My Gus does this more than not. He lays on the deck, he lays on the grass, during a rigorous walk we let him lay on the shaded concrete. He loves to drag himself around the house like this, we tell him how “creepy” he is and he just does it more. He’ll creep all the way down the hall!

  71. Holly June 3, 2011 at 9:17 am #

I have 2 cocker spaniels – one sits like that, and the other one can only get 1 pitiful leg behind her. She’s slightly broken.

  72. Annebeth June 6, 2011 at 12:31 am #

The dog of a friend of mine does exactly the same thing😀

  73. Niki June 6, 2011 at 7:46 pm #

Our Jack Russell Milo sits like that. Sometimes he’ll stretch his legs straight out behind him. I had never seen a dog sit like that before.

  74. awriterscraft June 12, 2011 at 7:39 pm #

My dog does this too. He’s a fat doxie … so it’s hilarious. I was told it means they have good hips?

  75. Tammie June 24, 2011 at 9:09 pm #

I have big dogs, mutts, and my male dog (Monty) lays like that both right side up and upside down. Our other one doesn’t maybe because she has some arthritis.

  76. Mallory June 27, 2011 at 11:41 am #

Aww! I love when my pups do this! I always noticed when my bullies would lay this way, and I thought they were silly and that it was unusual, but then I went to an ABKC dog show and every dog lay just the same! I thought it was hysterical =P

  77. Charlotte K July 16, 2011 at 11:22 pm #

My dogs used to do that on the cool kitchen floor during the summer; and roll over on her back and spread eagle by the fan to cool off. No dummy there.

  78. Daniel Johann August 18, 2011 at 10:20 am #

My dog sits like this all the time!
