Super(b) 8

9 Jun

Last night Beth and I went to the Super 8 premiere in Westwood.

I freakin’ loved it! It touched me in ways I remember movies used to.

I can’t recommend it enough.

My friend served you and Josh a burger last night at the after-party. He then went on to serve Damon, and then meet JJ himself. He kept me updated via text. I must admit, I am really jealous.

Really? I didn’t eat a burger that night.

I saw the coming attractions. It seems like a fun summer movie. Glad to hear you liked it.

“Monstruoso” y “Star Trek” me gustaron mucho, “Misión Imposible” no tanto…

Esta tengo muchas ganas de verla.

    Saludos.

I was having dinner last night at the CPK in WW as a fundraiser for my kid’s preschool, and my husband goes, “Look over there. It’s Jorge Garcia from Lost” and you were just walking in with your lovely lady. I told him that I read your blog… and now I’m commenting on that blog after seeing you across the street. The modern world and the way we communicate in it is a weird, wonderful thing.

Wow, I will have to see that this week-end! Looks great~~thanks!!

I’ve been getting a real good vibe about this movie from the ads. I haven’t been to see a movie in years, but I want to go see this one. Thanks for the confirmation!

  8. Sean Cunningham June 9, 2011 at 6:06 pm #

I have been waiting for this movie for over a year and I don’t expect to be disappointed at all. J.J. Abrams is the new Spielberg. He gets better with every project that he works on!

    • mts007 June 9, 2011 at 10:33 pm #

the movie was goonies meets e.t. meets close encounters meets the last mimzy. wasnt that good.

The preview @ the theater looked superb. Your recommendation is as good as they get..will go!

  10. pamelalovescharlie June 9, 2011 at 6:28 pm #

I was so happy when Beth said it was great! The last movie I saw in the theatre was War of the Worlds…I know…LOL…but we have 5 kids and it’s too expensive to take everyone, so we usually wait for the DVD . When I saw the previews it reminded me of the old fashioned monster movies I used to watch with my dad and I couldn’t wait to see it. I think I am going to spend the $$$ and go see it on the big screen. I expect I will love it and probably buy it when it’s released too. I really hate slasher flicks but giant bugs, creatures and aliens…LOVE em 😀

We are heading to the midnight showing in a few hours! I can’t wait!

  12. deards June 9, 2011 at 9:10 pm #

I just read Jo Garfein’s spoiler-free review. I can’t wait to go see it this weekend! It really helps to get some input, and/or review from you and Beth. I don’t set my foot in a movie theater as much as I used to, so getting a thumbs up from you makes all the difference.

  13. Claudia June 10, 2011 at 1:30 am #

Now I can’t wait to see it!!

  14. MM June 10, 2011 at 5:28 am #

I’ve been psyched for this movie ever since playing the interactive trailer in Portal 2, just wish the UK didn’t have to wait until August to see it 😦

  15. MARTA June 10, 2011 at 8:52 am #

Thanks Jorge for all your post!nice weekend!

I have an IMAX seat reserved for tomorrow… can’t wait!

  17. pamelalovescharlie June 10, 2011 at 10:04 am #

LOL…our newspaper critic said it was a must see….but good not great. He said it’s an old fashioned summer movie and is just what you are hoping it will be…he said “it’s Jaws, ET, and Close Encounters” I own all those movies and still watch them, even on TV when I am channel surfing and find them…Signs too 🙂 I know I will LOVE this…can’t wait to see it and then buy it!!!

  18. Ian June 10, 2011 at 11:32 am #

We are opening this at my theatre this weekend! You have no idea how hard my booker had to fight with Paramount to get this title to open at my 4 screen this weekend! But it happened!!!!

  19. hayleyscomett June 10, 2011 at 11:35 am #

I plan on seeing this one for sure!

  20. Tyson Garst June 10, 2011 at 1:00 pm #

THANKS A LOT JORGE!!!!! Now I am gonna have to buckle down and go see it STAT!!!!!

All I know is that when your favorite LOST character tells you to go see a friggin movie you better do it!!!!!

BUT, I hope it is not too scary/freaky …

  21. James Hernandez June 10, 2011 at 1:01 pm #

    Jorge,

It may be the only movie I go to this year.

  22. Jeff June 10, 2011 at 2:12 pm #

    Is it in 3D?

  23. cindyc June 10, 2011 at 2:27 pm #

  27. Rafa acmewolf June 11, 2011 at 11:44 pm #

I’m sure it’s a good movie. By the way, I’m a big fan of JJ Abrams, you can see a conference given in TED.COM, here is the link, in my blog: http://pulsoelectromagnetico.wordpress.com/2011/06/06/j-j-abrams-una-persona-a-la-que-admiro-mucho/
    Greetings.

I saw Super 8 yesterday and loved it. Highly recommended. A modern day E.T.

  30. Anne June 12, 2011 at 10:48 am #

Absolutely LOVED it. Maybe it was the J.J. Abrams/Michael Giacchino combo, but watching it gave me flashbacks to watching LOST. Made my heart ache a bit.

  31. Nitou June 12, 2011 at 12:55 pm #

I cannot wait to see this ! It just sounds amazing !

  32. 4n6princess June 12, 2011 at 8:25 pm #

I have to agree! I went into the movie not really expecting to be wowed and I’m not sure why. I didn’t know a whole lot about it. Usually, I research the crap out of anything before I see it but my husband said he really wanted to see Super 8 and I remembered your post saying how great it was. I LOVED it! Finally, a movie that captures what movies used to be about! Those kids were just hilarious and amazing. Everyone should see this!

  33. Karen June 13, 2011 at 3:56 am #

Loved it – those kids were soo funny like the kids in Stand by Me and The Goonies. Oh the monster was way cool also.

  34. Janet June 13, 2011 at 6:26 am #

Saw it yesterday. Made me laugh, cry, amused, anxious. It was fabulous. The fleeting moments of seeing the ‘whatever’ made it more suspenseful. I was happy the camera was relatively steady (unlike Cloverfield’s unnecessarily jittery camera), and that you could hear what was going on.

The stars (the kids, especially) were fantastic. Really liked Elle Fanning (can you believe she was 12 when she made that movie?) and Kyle Chandler, as well as Joel Courtney.

    Loved it. 5 stars.

    • Tena Lynn June 13, 2011 at 7:09 am #

      Great movie!!

I saw it yesterday, (my son took me out for my birthday) and it was fantastic!! This is one I will probably see again, and then buy it when the DVD comes out.

      Thanks, Jorge!!!!

  35. Kate C. June 13, 2011 at 9:29 am #

Took my 12-yr-old son to it and he is usually too “cool” at the movies with me, but from the beginning at the funeral (really hard to watch with your only son who is the same age as the kid in the movie–for both of us) to the scary parts to me trying to explain what a Walkman is and why that scene is funny–even though it ends horribly. He was holding my hand, gripping my arm, whispering, laughing, burying his face in my shoulder. I am so glad I experienced this with my son and he with me. We haven’t both been so engaged and riveted by a film all the way through now that he is older and trying to be much more independent from me. I think it reminded him that maybe Moms are important??? (Even when you spend most of your time trying to get away from them…) Terrific bonding for the two us! Parents, see it with your kids if you can. I think it makes it a lot more emotional.

Ein? your blog has changed, hasn´t it?

Well, anyway, I hope to see Super 8 in Spain and it doesn´t last in arriving too much.

  37. Robyn Ciaburri June 14, 2011 at 5:14 pm #

wow!!! what a cool night!! Happy for you. You got to spend some time with your LOST buddies. Wish you had some pixs to share. Just knowing you guys were hanging out made me smile. Miss the old gang.

  38. Toni Ford June 15, 2011 at 10:54 am #

Super 8 is like Goonies meet ET !!!!!! Loved it!

  39. Jeff June 15, 2011 at 12:02 pm #

I just figured this one out regarding the final episode of LOST…Vincent wasn’t in the church waiting to go into the light because he was already in the light. Dogs don’t have issues, so they don’t have to deal with purgatory.

    • Patrick June 19, 2011 at 8:56 pm #

I disagree. Walt wasn’t in the flash sideways. No Walt = No Vincent 🙂

  40. Dennis June 15, 2011 at 3:09 pm #

Saw the digital version today in a large theater with myself and my wife being the only ones there. Now that was a good time, and the movie was great, with the feeling of an old-time horror flick. Glad for what ran during the credits, as well.

  41. Anne McCandlish June 15, 2011 at 6:07 pm #

Just saw this and totally agree with you-it was awesome. Lots of viewers left the second the credits began-their loss! The kids’ video was excellent (in a funny way!). Thanks for endorsing it-I don’t really like sci-fi that much-loved this. Not as much as I loved LOST though!

  42. Laura June 16, 2011 at 9:30 am #

Beth was described as unidentified companion on ew.com

  43. JoAnne June 17, 2011 at 9:43 am #

I agree! Took my 18-year old daughter to see it on Sunday. We spent the whole movie alternating between hands over mouths in shock or laughter. How cool was it to recognize SIMON from 7th Heaven in such a different role? Loved every, every, every BIT of that movie. Elle Fanning…the moment when she begins to ‘act’ – how great was that? We came out smiling and feeling emotionally spent, which hasn’t happened in forever in a movie. so happy it’s getting great reviews!

  44. Janet June 19, 2011 at 3:22 pm #

Agree with you, Jorge. I gave it 5 stars. Made me laugh, cry, shudder, curious, everything!

It did remind me of my childhood days of Saturday afternoon movie time. 😀

Totally loved this movie. It was well cast (can you believe Elle Fanning was 12 when she made this movie? Holy crap!), including Ron Eldard as the hippie dad and the always likeable Kyle Chandler, and welcome new face, Joel Courtney. Sweet!

J.J. Abrams did a terrific job putting this movie together.

    Could not have been better.

  45. Patrick June 19, 2011 at 8:53 pm #

I was a little disappointed by it. Thought it started out great but got a little too silly towards the end. Great characters though and solid storytelling, just felt both were under served by the way it played out.

  46. purposefullyliving June 23, 2011 at 5:09 am #

oh, i feel EXACTLY the same way!!! 🙂

  47. Tena Lynn August 5, 2011 at 6:01 am #

Just wanted to say because of your recommendation I saw this and LOVED it~~~have seen it twice and plan to buy it on DVD, It won’t be the same on the small screen, but I can’t get enough of this movie!! Thanks again!!
